Chapter Twenty-One

So, was that the stupid thing you didn’t want to do before we flung ourselves into those tunnels?” Miles asked. He was naked from the waist up, lying back on the bed.

Amelia sat up, her back against the window next to the bed. “Yes it was,” she admitted. “I know it’s probably not professional to sleep with your bodyguard, but it’s been on my mind for a while now.”

“Since?”

“Since Scotland,” Amelia said. “You do realise that you’re an exceptional powerful, confident, broody vampire, yes? And you have that accent. Makes me go all aquiver.”

Miles laughed. “Nae sure anyone has ever said that about me before, but I’ll take it.”

“There it is again,” Amelia said with a playful smile. “Now, we can’t be running off to do this all the time. This was a one-time thing, because I figured we could both use a bit of a diversion.”

“And you were horny.”

“Yeah, basically,” Amelia said. “But even so, one-time thing. At least until we’re done in Maine. Neither of us can afford the distraction.” She leaned over to him and ran a finger from his chest down to his stomach before moving back. “And while you are very distracting at this exact moment, it would probably be better for us to concentrate on why we’re here.”

“You know you’re naked, right?” Miles asked. “That’s pretty distracting.”

“Well, you are a vampire and should be over such base things,” Amelia said, shifting in the bed.

“Base things?” Miles asked her, moving toward her with a smile. “You want me to show you the base things I’m meant to be over?”

Amelia leaned in and kissed Miles with passion. “God, yes,” she whispered when she pulled away.

“Someone’s at the door,” Miles told her as he slowly ran his index finger over the inside of her thigh.

“Can we pretend we’re out?” Amelia asked.

There was a knock on the door.

“Not really,” Miles whispered into her ear.

“Motherfucker,” Amelia said. “We will take this up at the soonest opportunity.”

Miles got to his feet and pulled up his jeans without fastening them, as he willed parts of his body to cooperate. “Be right there,” he called out as there was another knock.

Amelia stared at Miles’s predicament and smiled. “Oh, yeah, right there,” she said in a voice full of need.

“You are not helping,” Miles told her.

“I can definitely help,” Amelia told him in the same voice.

“Still not helping,” Miles said, going into the bathroom and splashing cold water on his face as Amelia got dressed and went to the door first.

“Thomas,” Amelia said. “Come in. Miles is in the bathroom. He had to shower all the… I don’t even want to think about it.”

Miles left the bathroom having fastened his jeans, and went back to the bedroom to grab a black long-sleeved jumper from his bag, putting it on. He grabbed a pair of socks and exited the bedroom. Amelia was sitting on the sofa wearing a T-shirt and jeans, without anything covering her feet. She smiled at him, and he wondered how quickly he could get rid of Thomas again.
